What is the Callan Method?

The Callan Method was designed to make students as involved as possible in the learning process and learn English as fast as they can. The method was developed in 1960 by Mr Robin Callan and has been used successfully in 26 countries and about 300 language schools. The Callan School in London is the largest school in Europe, in which 2500 students are studying English.

The Callan Method focuses on practical English

The Method is a rigorously structured programme of instruction, divided into twelve stages. The teacher asks students a series of questions, which the students must answer. Because the Method aims to get students to speak, classes hold the attention of students and stimulate their memory.

In Callan Method lessons the students and teacher are always speaking. Question-answer work is very important in Callan Method lessons. The teacher asks questions which the students must answer. The teacher helps the students to answer these questions correctly by saying the answers with the students.

The teacher speaks very fast without stopping. The students must always concentrate. They must listen carefully and answer quickly. There is no time to think in their language. This means the Callan Method is a good way of learning English. The Callan Method helps students to speak with native speakers of English, and it helps students to listen to native speakers, because fast speaking is always part of the lesson.

Students practise reading with Readings. The students read Lessons they have already done in question-answer work. Students see words they have heard before and say them.

The Callan Method teaches the skills of speaking, listening, writing, and reading. It teaches them quickly.

Callan puts passive knowledge into practice ? students become active learners

Many students know English grammar very well, but they cannot speak English well. The Callan Method helps students to say what they want to say.

OZCA recognises that many international students arrive in Australia after learning English for many years, often more than ten. Despite this, they cannot speak or write English confidently.

Because the students and teacher are speaking the whole lesson, the Method conditions the students to think in English without them noticing it happening. Students are constantly being asked questions which they must answer, so they have to concentrate for 60 seconds of every minute.

Learning process of the Callan Method

The basic idea of the Method is that students are speaking throughout the lesson. Students must not only listen the whole time, but they must also speak, because they are constantly being asked questions. In this way students soon become confident in conversation outside the classroom.

Talking at top speed

One of the ways the Callan Method achieves maximum speaking time and maximum concentration is that during a Callan session the teacher speaks to the students in English at about 240 words a minute. This is faster than normal conversational speed, which is about 180 words a minute.

Speed is necessary

To talk to native speakers, students must speak and understand quickly. Of course, accuracy and correctness are important, especially in writing, but speed is absolutely essential in speaking and understanding. When listening, the understanding has to come instantly. The student must be able to understand English at a minimum speed of 180 words a minute.

Revision overcomes poor memory

The two great enemies of learning are boredom and poor memory. The Callan Method overcomes boredom through speed, and poor memory through revision.

Knowledge and speed are considered for English level

Callan Method schools divide their students according to both knowledge and speed. It recognises that there is a big difference between ¡°knowing¡± a language and being able to ¡°use¡± that language, and to use it at speed.
